The Lab in the Literature Writing Lab
Teacher: Mrs. Tullos
Course description:
This is a writing course with Lab for upper middle school (or teacher approval) with children
who have excellent self-governing skills, exceptional listening skills, and a desire to challenge
themselves in their writing. This class will have a future service dog in training from Canine
Companions present in the classroom from August through the end of January. He will be our
source of study, training, and inspiration. We will be reading several short books, researching
pertinent subject matter, and watching a few doggy documentaries. We will also be taking the
puppy around ECHO on small training adventures where we will be filming and recording his
progress. We will be using all this information to keep a blog-like diary of his weekly progress,
to write mini essays regarding topics about future service dogs, and to fashion fun creative
writing stories. Because this is a writing LAB where students are expected to utilize the writing
skills they have already learned, there are specific requirements.
Requirements:
Must have a desire to write
Must like and respect dogs
Must follow the rules
Must be able to write paragraphs
Must be able to type
Must have parental approval to record, be recorded, write and share material
Materials:
***Must have an iPad or computer(I would like to use google classroom to write and share work) for recording,
writing, and sharing information*** This device MUST be brought FULLY charged to class each week.
Homework: There will be about 30 minutes of homework each night which may include reading,
researching, writing, and editing.
BEFORE SIGNING UP:
Due to the specific needs of the puppy in training, this class will be limited to a smaller
number of students.
Any student who would like to join this puppy’s mission, please set up a meeting with Mrs.
Tullos to assess readiness.
