About the Course: In today’s data-driven society, the ability to understand, analyze, and interpret statistical information is crucial. This course offers students a comprehensive introduction to statistics and research design principles, while emphasizing their practical applications in real-life scenarios. Students will learn to think critically about statistics frequently cited in the media, evaluate cited sources to determine if conclusions drawn from the data are appropriate, and develop essential skills for navigating the abundance of data encountered in everyday life. Through a combination of lectures, discussions, hands-on activities, and real-world data, this course will equip students with the tools and mindset necessary to critically engage with statistical information, make informed decisions, and become savvy consumers of data in today’s rapidly evolving world.
Instructor background: I have a BA in Psychology from UCO and worked as a research technician for the Federal Aviation Administration for 6 years. In that time, I helped design research studies, collected and analyzed data, authored research papers, and presented research findings at multiple scientific conferences. I have homeschooled my children for the past 5 years while also running a small farm with my husband for nearly 17 years.
