Materials: 1 inch 3-ring binder, expo markers, pencil with eraser, and workbook Workbook: Reading Horizons Elevate Student Workbook; Purchase here:https://athome.readinghorizons.com/store/reading-horizons-v5-student-workbook Course Description:
Is your student a struggling or reluctant reader? This small group and one-on-one tutoring provides a private and individualized environment for students to build and enhance reading skills. We will use the Reading Horizons: Discovery program for students ages 1-3 grade, or the Reading Horizons: Elevate program for students ages 4th grade and older. The instructor will identify challenges faced by the individual student and tailor instruction to his or her needs. The focus will be on helping students build the various skills required to become a skilled reader, including phonological awareness, phonics and decoding, sight recognition, fluency, vocabulary, language structures, and verbal reasoning.
Designed for students with dyslexia and English Language Learners, the Reading Horizons Elevate® program provides struggling readers with strategies that help them understand the patterns and structure of the English language. The skills taught in this program drastically decrease reading, spelling, and pronunciation errors while building reading fluency and comprehension. Teacher-led instruction uses multisensory lessons to help every student understand each skill needed to read the English language and helps struggling students (including those with dyslexia) build the brain connections needed to make sense of reading.
Please note: This class/fee does NOT include a subscription to Reading Horizons’ supplemental software. Parents may choose to purchase this on their own to supplement class learning, but it is NOT a required purchase.
Instructor Background
I am a trained reading interventionist (coach), and I previously taught public elementary school (2nd and 4th grades) for five years. During this time I worked with a large number of English Language Learners and students with dyslexia. Both in graduate school and during my years in the classroom, I focused my training on the Science of Reading and reading disabilities. After the pandemic, I transitioned to working in the home, and have tutored students of various ages in reading. I enjoy playing board games, reading (for pleasure, and to learn new things) and spending time with my family!
