Fee: $35/month tuition plus $15 per semester materials & workbook fee Text: Workbook & student whiteboard will be provided
Materials: 1 inch 3-ring binder, dividers, Expo marker, and pencil with eraser
Course Description:
Is your child a reluctant or struggling reader? Or, are they slowly developing into a reader, but could use some extra instruction and practice? This course will help “the lightbulb” turn on and provide an opportunity for students to build on any previous knowledge they have of phonics, reading, spelling, and writing to enhance reading abilities. We will utilize the Reading Horizons: Discovery materials. While Reading Horizons is ideal for students with dyslexia, any young readers will benefit from this instruction! The Reading Horizons Discovery® program provides struggling readers and English Language Learners with strategies that help them understand the patterns and structure of the English language. The skills taught in this program drastically decrease reading, spelling, and pronunciation errors while building reading fluency and comprehension. Teacher-led instruction uses multisensory lessons to help every student understand each skill needed to read the English language and helps struggling students (including those with dyslexia) build the brain connections needed to make sense of reading.
Please note: This class/fee does NOT include a subscription to Reading Horizons’ supplemental software. Parents may choose to purchase this on their own to supplement class learning, but it is NOT a required purchase.
Instructor Background:
I am a trained reading interventionist (coach), and I previously taught public elementary school (2nd and 4th grades) for five years. During this time I worked with a large number of English Language Learners and students with dyslexia. Both in graduate school and during my years in the classroom, I focused my training on the Science of Reading and reading disabilities. After the pandemic, I transitioned to working in the home, and have tutored students of various ages in reading. I enjoy playing board games, reading (for pleasure, and to learn new things) and spending time with my family!
