Choose an Instrument: Clarinet, Flute, Alto Saxophone Instructor: Ariel Kennedy
Level: 10 years old by August 13, 2024
Tuition: $35 monthly
Fee: $10 sheet music fee for whole year
Textbooks & Supplies: Essential Elements (Specific Instrument), Music Folder/Notebook, Pencil Materials At Home: Instrument & Supplies*, Music Stand, metronome or metronome app
Course Description:
Students will begin learning the art of playing a woodwind instrument of their choice. They will learn the basics of reading music and theory, keeping time, the fingering system for their instrument, proper breathing techniques, and how to play in a small ensemble. This class is great for students who wish to learn a new instrument and want to jump into playing in a larger band later on. It is also a good way to try out an instrument without a huge risk of cost, especially if you are able to rent (more information on that below). Each semester we will have a small concert for parents and friends!
Instruments:
Students may buy or rent an instrument. My recommendation is to rent or borrow from someone. Most music stores such as Edmond Music or Gilliam Music, have a rent-to-own instrument program. These are great because the cost is low, money goes towards the instrument, and they provide repair plans if the instrument breaks or faulty. Plus, you can rent/buy used or new. Rental cost can be roughly $18-$60/month depending on type and usage. You are charged each month until cost of instrument is paid in full or instrument is returned. Please do not buy an instrument unless you know 100% that your child will play this through college AND if you know someone who plays that instrument well and can recommend a good brand to purchase. Lastly, each instrument comes with a list of supplies needed to play &/or care for the instrument. These do cost extra, and I can provide a more detailed list once you and your child have decided on an instrument. Some supplies are a one-time purchase, while others are continuous (i.e. reeds, cork grease). Note: I will hold an instrument tryout day prior to the first week of classes (Time/Date TBD).
Instructor Background:
First and foremost, I am a believer in Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior. He is the reason I do anything. At this time, I have the privilege of homeschooling my 3 kids (2 girls, and 1 boy), while my husband serves in the Navy. After receiving my Masters in Elementary Education with certification (2022), I have decided to look for other teaching opportunities while still ministering and providing an education for my own children. Hopefully, through ECHO, I will be able to share my love of woodwind playing with your children. As far as my credentials for teaching woodwinds, I have a Bachelors Degree in Music Business from the University of Arkansas (2007). In addition to my degree, I studied music education courses on all band instruments. Bassoon is my major instrument, but I have played all common woodwinds you would find in a band and/or orchestra throughout my education years. I have taught bassoon, clarinet, flute, saxophone, and oboe privately. Also, I have performed professionally and in local community bands and orchestras throughout Oklahoma, Arkansas, California, and Washington. I was a 1st chair Oklahoma All-State player in 2003, and have received many top ratings in solo and ensemble competitions. I am excited to share my experiences and knowledge in woodwind playing with your children!
