American Sign Language 2 (ASL 2)
PREREQUISITE: ASL 1 (grade C or higher)
This class will review what we learned in ASL 1 (finger spelling, introduce basic vocabulary and introductory skills) and then build on that vocabulary plus gain understanding of sentence structure of this language. We will learn new songs and some scripture from the Bible.
Instructor: Janet Crouch, I see my text messages faster but will respond to either. (405) 517-2780 and [email protected]
Grade: 9-12th
Fees: $35/month tuition, PLUS $15 fee per student for the year
Text: Learning American Sign Language by Tom L. Humphries and Carol Padden. ISBN: 0-13- 528571-2. We will mostly rely on Learning American Sign Language as it gets into greater detail about the sentence structure. If I add supplemental material, I will send copies with students.
I have purchased a DVD to use with Learning American Sign Language (by Tom Humphries) and also a DVD from Signing Naturally. Students DO NOT need to purchase the DVD’s. I play them in class so students can see dialogue between two ASL speaking people. The second DVD is more advanced and a storytelling activity. The longer video enables ASL 2 deeper receptive practice in a fun way.
Course Description:
This ASL class is a continuation of ASL I. We have a good foundation of vocabulary and short sentences from that class including fingerspelling, numbers, introduction, pledge of allegiance, and some song. This class will continue to add vocabulary and will be implementing the use of sentences each week. We will again learn songs and scripture. We also play some games and use either fingerspelling or ASL in these games. I will give a quiz as new vocabulary is introduced. A semester grade and year-end grade is given to assist you in your homeschool requirements. This will be sent hard copy with your child.
Additional source but not required:
The Oklahoma School for the Deaf in Sulphur, Oklahoma offers an ASL 1 and ASL 2 online class. It is a wonderful way to be able to practice on a daily basis. Classes, even though online, are limited so when the window to enroll is open, I highly recommend enrolling immediately in this class. If students took ASL 1 (OSD), I would recommend ASL 2. However, if you did not take the online class, I recommend ASL 1 in the fall and ASL 2 in the spring in conjunction with this class.
