Early American History
Teacher: Ed Nace
Ages: 8th through 12th
Tuition: $35/month
Copy Fees: $20 once
Books: The American Story: The Beginnings, by Barton & Barton. In addition, throughout the year I will assign up to eight novels relating to the time period we are in. You can buy them used or new, or find them at the library, Kindle, or any way you want.
Course: Students will learn and discuss (and chew on and poke at) the major people, ideas, and events surrounding the founding of the U.S.A. After briefly discussing the history of the whole world, we will talk about the Vikings and their brush-up with the Kingdom of God (and Canada), then we will jump into the timeline just before the early European settlers. We cover Columbus the Italian and his interactions with good Tainos, evil Caribs, and evil Spanish crewmates. We cover the Protestant Reformation in Europe and the first settlers in Virginia and Massachusetts, and the long historical patterns set by each. We cover the faithful Puritans, their backsliding grandchildren, the Great Awakening, the Abuses of King George III, the War for Independence, the formation of the USA, and the Constitution. Finally, we begin the Westward Expansion, Jefferson’s Add-a-State Plan, and end just before the Civil War.
Throughout, we will especially linger on the role of Christianity and its influence or absence in each situation. I hope students walk away with plenty of historical figures to look up to, some to remember as cautionary tales, and hope and direction for their future.
May they become a joyful, confident generation of faithful disciples of the Lord Jesus, just like many culture-building Americans before them!
Homework: There will be reading assignments each week, with light, informal writing assignments to respond to what they learned.
