Text: Only one textbook is needed to be purchased.
Learning American Sign Language by Tom L. Humphries and Carol Padden. ISBN: 0-13-528571-2 A used book can be purchased. It does not need to be the newest version. The 1992 release date is the preferred version. I was successful in finding on Thriftbooks and Abebooks for $10 or less in good condition. I have purchased a DVD to use with Learning American Sign Language (by Tom Humphries) and also a DVD from Signing Naturally. Students DO NOT need to purchase the DVD’s. I play them in class so students can see dialogue between two ASL speaking people.
Course Description:
We will learn to fingerspell (ABC’s), numbers, learn how to introduce ourselves, pronouns, daily conversations, basic grammar, politeness, descriptions, and requests. We will also learn the Pledge of Allegiance and traditional hymns. As we add new vocabulary words an exam will be given over the information we have learned. We also practice that vocabulary in signing to each other in sentences. We play interactive games and use either fingerspelling or ASL in these games. Students watch a DVD that accompanies our textbook and interprets from ASL to English what is being said in the video. Students do not need to purchase the DVD.
Class Size: Minimum of 6 students and maximum of 10 students
Grades
Students will have a quiz at the beginning of class time about every third week. Students will know what unit to study the week preceding the quiz. I will sign the word or sentence and students must write the answer. I will repeat the sign three times. There will be a semester grade and then a year end grade. I will send the grade on a hard copy so you may have them for your records.

The Oklahoma School for the Deaf in Sulphur, Oklahoma offers an ASL 1 and ASL 2 online class. It is a wonderful way to be able to practice on a daily basis. Classes, even though online, are limited so when the window to enroll is open, I highly recommend enrolling immediately in this class. If students took ASL 1 (OSD), I would recommend ASL 2. However, if you did not take the online class, I recommend ASL 1 in the fall and ASL 2 in the spring in conjunction with this class.
