Middle School Language Arts Through Literature: Ingenuity, Perseverance, Friendship, and Family

Course Description: In this middle school Language Arts Through Literature class, students will study vocabulary, parts of speech, classifying sentences, literary devices, finding contextual evidence to support conclusions, and learn to write various types of essays. We will strive for this goal throughout the year by diving into thought provoking literature. By studying these many components of reading language arts, students should become more confident readers and writers.
Supplies to purchase and bring to class each week: 4 three-ring 1 -inch binders, loose leaf paper, mechanical pencils, and a highlighter.
Books that are scheduled to be read this year are as follows:
The Lemonade War by Jacqueline Davies
Rascal by Sterling North
The Gift of the Magi by O. Henry
Snow Treasure by Marie McSwigan
Tuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbitt
Homework: There will be about 30 minutes of homework each day to include reading, reading comprehension, and a writing activity.
Materials Fee: There will be a monthly $35 fee and a one-time $35 material fee for the year which will cover copy and curriculum fees.
Note: I will be sending out work each week that will need to be printed at home and brought back to class.
Tutor Background: Denise Tullos received her Bachelors of Science degree in Elementary Education, Summa Cum Laude, from the University of North Dakota. She is married to Owen, a wonderful God-fearing and loving husband, who recently retired from the United States Air Force after 28 years of service. Before starting a family, Mrs. Tullos taught in Christian schools for six years. She began teaching homeschool in 2005. They have four children ages 27,24, 17, and 15 who have all attended their family homeschool. Their older two children are pursuing the paths the Lord has for them as an attorney and an ultrasound technologist. Over the course of 30 years and 12 moves, life has taken them on wonderful adventures all over the world. They have trusted that God is with them wherever they go, that His ways are best, and that His creation is marvelous! When Mrs. Tullos is not teaching, she enjoys reading, studying the Bible (especially women’s Bible studies), hiking, and playing games with her family.
